Note: While great efforts have been taken to provide accurate and complete information on the pages of CPEP, please be aware that the information contained herewith is considered a work-in-progress for this thesis project. Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project are solely the interpretation of Paul Stewart. Changes and discrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code reference, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore, investigation results may vary from the original design.

Thesis Proposal

Proposal

The ultimate goal of this thesis is to relocate the existing helipad, currently located in the parking area of the hospital, to the roof. A redesign of the building's gravity and lateral systems will be required due to the added weight of the helipad. The Southern Building's lateral system will also be altered to exclude any moment frames to help stiffen the building.

Breadth Topic One - Lighting/Electrical

The first breadth topic is a lighting/electrical design for the lights on the helipad. This will involve a design of a new power plan and voltage drop calculations to be performed.

Breadth Topic Two - Acoustics

The second breadth topic is an acoustical study to determine the new noise levels in the hospital due to the extra noise added from a medical helicopter. The building envelope will be redesigned in the case of high decibel readings in the patients' rooms.

MAE Course - Related Study

The MAE requirements for this project will be fulfilled through the design of the seismic loads. Methods taught in AE 538: Earthquake Design, will be used to determine the seismic loads from the added weight of the building. Additionally, use of the AE 597A: Computer Modeling course will be vital when modeling the Hospital. Material learned in this course will help with ETABS modeling.
